Health is the single biggest federal grant category by dollar volume, driven by HHS agencies: HRSA (community health, rural health), SAMHSA (behavioral health and substance use), CDC (public health), and NIH (research). Community-based nonprofits fit best in HRSA and SAMHSA programs, which regularly fund direct services; NIH listings are mostly for research institutions. Health grants tend to have the longest and most technical applications, but also some of the highest award ceilings and renewal rates.
