About this opportunity

-Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is based on the scientific recommendations proposed by the working group on developmental biology and regeneration of the liver in the recently approved trans-NIH Action Plan for Liver Disease Research (http://liverplan.niddk.nih.gov). The purpose of this FOA is to invite qualified scientific investigators to submit applications on liver development and regeneration to fully define the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying these processes in health and disease and to apply these findings to developing improved therapies for liver disease. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) mechanism, and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-06-232, that solicits applications under the Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
